Offset’s legal fight with Detroit’s MotorCity Casino Hotel is now in danger of moving ahead without him. A judge says the rapper missed the deadline to respond to the casino’s lawsuit, and the case is now shifting toward a possible default judgment.
A Sept. 11, 2026 scheduling order from Wayne County Circuit Court, posted to X by @DocumentTingz, shows Judge Qiana Denise Lillard ruled that Offset—whose legal name is Kiari Cephus—was properly served with the lawsuit but never filed an answer. Because of that, the judge told MotorCity to file a default and then submit a motion asking for a default judgment. That motion has to be filed and heard.
No judgment has been entered yet, and Offset has not been found liable.
MotorCity sued Offset on March 30, 2026, saying he didn’t repay a $100,000 gambling credit line he opened during a March 2024 visit. Court documents reported earlier say Offset signed a marker on March 19, 2024 that was tied to his personal checking account. The casino says the agreement allowed it to pull the money directly from that account. When MotorCity tried to collect, the withdrawal bounced because of insufficient funds.
The lawsuit accuses Offset of breach of contract, fraud, and other related claims. One count, filed under Michigan’s law for bounced checks, seeks up to twice the amount of the marker before fees and interest. TMZ first reported the details, and other outlets later confirmed them through court filings.
When the lawsuit became public in April, a representative for Offset told TMZ the two sides were “working toward a resolution.” The September order shows no response was ever filed with the court.
Michigan’s rules allow a default when a defendant doesn’t answer a lawsuit. Once a default is entered, the defendant usually can’t take part in the case unless the judge agrees to undo it.
To get a default set aside, the defendant must explain why they missed the deadline and show they might have a real defense. If the defendant was personally served, Michigan law sets strict deadlines for asking the court to undo a default judgment. The scheduling order says Offset was served, but doesn’t say whether it was personally served.
